Samuel Atkins (c1765–1808)
A Passenger Hog off North Foreland
Watercolour over pencil with scratching out Signed 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 in ( 10.8 x 16.5 cm ) Provenance: Frost and Reed, N Young Price £1,650
A lovely example of this marine artist in perfect condition. It has come to me directly from a private collection in Sussex where I have known the family and admired their collection for many years. The picture was exhibited in the 1980's with Frost and Reed in St James's. Many travellers and artists used passenger hogs like this one for coastal journeys around the United Kingdom. It would have been a rather wet and windy start for any continental journey between Dover and Calais. This watercolour was Exhibited at the recent BADA Loan Show (March 2017) ' Samuel Prout A Grand Tour in Watercolour' to illustrate Prout's travels and the hardship he suffered on his continental tours in the 1820's. Early viewing is recommended.
